Clinical supervision is more than just a requirement—it’s a transformative journey that shapes the next generation of social workers. As a supervisor, I am committed to providing a supportive, insightful space where new professionals can grow in confidence, skill, and ethical practice. Together, we navigate challenges, celebrate successes, and cultivate the deep empathy and resilience needed to create meaningful change in the lives of those we serve. Supervision is not just about meeting standards—it’s about fostering a lifelong commitment to learning, advocacy, and compassionate care.
FAQ
WHAT TO EXPECT
LMSW’s under supervision typically meet with their Supervisor for 4 hours per month. In my program, all sessions are held virtually (online). As a Supervisee, you can live any where in Texas and participate in supervision with me, most candidates participate in a two-hour group session twice per month. The board requires Supervisee’s to meet with their Supervisor for a minimum of 100 hours throughout the course of a minimum of 3,000 supervised clinical hours. Typically, this is done within a 24-to-48-month period, however there is no longer a maximum time limit for completing supervision.
In order to participate in supervision, the Supervisee must be employed and working at least 30 hours per week to complete within a 24-month period, typically. Supervisee’s working part-time must work at least 15 hours per week in order to complete supervision within a 48-month time frame, typically. Part-time employees must complete at least 1 hour of supervision per 40 work hours (usually equates to 2-3 supervision hours per month).
All Supervisee’s are required to complete a minimum of 3,000 supervised clinical hours in order to apply to sit for the LCSW licensing exam.
HOW DO I KNOW IF MY JOB QUALIFIES AS A CLINICAL SOCIAL WORK POSITION?
Clinical supervision is defined in the rules at 22 TAC 781.102 (12) and includes “using specialized clinical knowledge and advanced skills to asses, diagnose, and treat mental, emotional, and behavioral disorders, conditions, and addictions… Treatment methods may include but are not limited to, providing individual, marital, family, couples and group psychotherapy. Clinical social workers are qualified and authorized to use the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders (DSM), the International Classification of Diseases (ICD), Current Procedural Terminology (CPT) codes, and other diagnostic classification systems in the assessment, diagnosis and other practice activities.”
In short if you assess, diagnose and treat mental health and/or substance abuse disorders using DSM-V criteria for at least 4 hours per week, you are eligible for LCSW supervision. As long as you are using a diagnostic skill set and/or screening tools (i.e. clinical skills) when interacting with clients/patients personally, you are fulfilling this requirement and are thereby qualified to receive LCSW supervision.
CAN I WORK TOWARDS MY LCSW IF MY JOB IS NOT CLINICAL OR CLINICAL ENOUGH?
Yes.
If your job is not sufficiently “clinical”, the board has provided a remedy. An LMSW whose job description is not sufficient to be approved by the board for a Clinical Supervision Plan on its own merits may submit, in conjunction with the original Clinical Supervision Plan specific to the “non-clinical” job, a separate, supplemental Clinical Supervision Plan, which describes a minimum of 4 hours per week of clinical experience as defined by the board’s rules, in the same or another setting with the same Supervisor.
If approved by the Board Approved Supervisor, the supervised clinical experience hours at the “primary” job as well as the “supplemental” job(s) may be counted towards fulfilling minimum requirements for licensure as a LCSW.
Most jobs are rarely 100% clinical, due to this Supervisee’s typically average 30 eligible hours per week over a 2-year period.
MAY I SEEK LCSW SUPERVISION OUTSIDE OF MY PLACE OF EMPLOYMENT?
Yes!
If the Board Approved Supervisor is not employed by or under contract with the agency to provide supervision towards licensure, the Supervisee is required to obtain and submit along with the Clinical Supervision Plan a letter from the agency executive or their designee on agency letterhead which authorizes the Supervisee to engage in supervision with said outside Supervisor. This requirement can be met by sending an email to your agency designee with your Supervisor CC’d.
WHAT IS GROUP SUPERVISION LIKE TYPICALLY?
During a typical group supervision session, group members present cases or ethical dilemmas they’ve encountered at work, and receive feedback from myself as well as other group members. We also explore the DSM-V, various therapeutic modalities, medications and tips to prepare for as well as pass the LCSW examination.
GETTING STARTED WITH SUPERVISION
Once supervision commences, we will complete a Social Work Supervision Agreement along with the Clinical supervision Plan. I will also ask that you notify your employer via an email I am CC’d on that you are receiving supervision from me.
My cost for supervision is $125 per hour, at 4 hours per month, for a total of $500 per month. Supervision sessions are conducted on a bi-weekly basis. Typically, you will attend two 2-hour sessions per month, allowing you to complete supervision within a 24–25-month period. Some employers may reimburse you for supervision costs, so be sure to ask!
My supervision sessions are primarily done in group format, however, if required by the board, I will honor individual sessions. If you desire to have individual sessions, and my schedule is able to accommodate you, I typically schedule 1-hour individual sessions, via telephone, at the same rate of $125/hour, not to exceed 4 individual sessions per year.
If you haven’t done so already, please email me if you’re interested in beginning supervision!
DOCUMENTATION
We no longer submit paperwork to the board when you begin supervision nor do we submit supervision applications to the board. Please keep a copy for your records along with the email sent to your employer informing them of your commencement of supervision.
I do however recommend creating a binder or computer folder for supervision documents. Make sure you CC me on the email you send to your boss/employer stating you’ve begun supervision with me, for records sake and to cover yourself in case the board randomly decides to audit (rare however possible).
